2015 may well determine whether or not the world is capable of coming together to fight global climate change. World leaders have set a December deadline to forge an international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in an effort to avoid the worst impacts of climate change, and keep warming below 2º C. Our policy makers will either put the world on a path towards a more stable climate, or continue down the path of runaway climate change and a closing window of opportunity to do something. Now, more than ever, we have to act. And we must convince our leaders to lead.
At Ben & Jerry’s, we believe that climate change is a structural problem in need of a political solution. That means all of us working together. Our climate partner, Avaaz, has quickly become one of the world’s largest and most powerful online activist networks. With over 40 million participating members in 194 countries, Avaaz provides a way for concerned citizens everywhere to take action.
Join Avaaz, Ben & Jerry’s and the millions of citizens from around the world who are calling on leaders of the developed nations and the UN to tackle climate change. We’re calling on world leaders to commit to transitioning to 100% Clean Energy by 2050. This ambitious goal is in line with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC’s) call for the elimination of all fossil fuel carbon pollution in the next 85 years. Avaaz has already hand-delivered copies of the petition to world leaders, including UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and French President François Hollande. The text of the petition is reproduced in full here:
“To national, local and international leaders: Scientists warn us that climate change could accelerate beyond our control, threatening our survival and everything we love. We call on you to keep global temperature rise under the unacceptably dangerous level of 2 degrees Celsius by phasing out carbon pollution to zero. To achieve this, you must urgently forge realistic global, national and local agreements to rapidly shift our societies and economies to 100% clean energy by 2050. Do this fairly, with support to the most vulnerable among us. Our world is worth saving, and now is our moment to act. But to change everything, we need everyone. Join us.”
