Establishment Costs
How much does a Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shop cost to establish?
The cost of opening a scoop shop, like the cost of opening any business, can vary dramatically depending on where and when and exactly what type and size of scoop shop you are opening. Did you find a perfect location in a heritage building? Is the building you love in disrepair, or is it a new construction? Is it in an existing food service building? Is it in the city or the suburbs? Does your site require lots of seating? All of these things, and many more, impact startup costs. We'll walk you through these factors carefully later, but to give you a rough idea of the costs, we've put together the following broad guidelines:
| Large Footprint | Small Footprint | |
| Franchise Fee | $50,000 | $50,000 |
| Legal and Accounting | $8,000 to $13,000 | $8,000 to $13,000 |
| Property Location Fee | $10,000 to $12,000 | $10,000 to $12,000 |
| General and Administrative | $30,000 to $45,000 | $20,000 to $35,000 |
| Fitout and Equipment | $220,000 to $400,000 | $145,000 to $225,000 |
| Opening Promotion | $14,000 to 21,000 | $7,000 to $11,000 |
| Staff Training and Induction | $4,000 to $8,000 | $3,000 to $5,000 |
| Rental Bond | Varies for each site. If not known assume 3 months rent | |
| Working Capital | Based on business ramp up and success of launch. | |
Establishment cost descriptions:
Franchise fee - this is a one off fee which is required to gain access to use the Ben & Jerry's trademarks and operate your scoop shop. It also includes all the assistance we will provide during your store identification, design and fit out. The franchisee and store manager Australian based training is included in this fee.
Legal and accounting - this includes establishing a company, getting independent legal, accounting and business advice prior to opening your scoop shop. It also includes the cost of having your franchise agreement prepared.
Property Location Fee - Ben & Jerry's use a specialist property agent to assist us to find suitable locations. Should you find a suitable location this fee would not be payable.
General and Administrative - these costs include purchase and installation of a range of equipment and services including point of sale, alarm, internet and phone services.
Fit out and Equipment - this is the major cost and includes all building and structural works plus the major equipment (fridges and freezers) required to establish a scoop shop.
Opening Promotion - this is an estimate of the amount required to successfully launch your scoop shop. Ben and Jerry's will closely assist you with this campaign.
Staff training and induction - we will train you and a store manager as part of your franchise fee. While we will assist with training additional staff, you may be required to pay them while they attend training.
Rental Bond - this varies from site to site but as an estimate you should allow 3 months rent
Working Capital - You will need additional funds to support on-going expenses, such as payroll, rent and utilities, to the extent that these costs are not covered by sales revenue. New businesses often generate a negative cash flow during their early months of operation.
A more detailed description of the total investment required is available in our Franchise Disclosure Document.
